Algerian Hydrocarbons giant “Sonatrach” unable to supply more gas in the coming five years

The energy expert and former advisor of the General Manager of the Algerian Hydrocarbons company, Sonatrach, Mourad Preur has indicated that the company’s decision to freeze its activities since last January is regarded as weak marketing strategy for a group which has never delayed in sealing new contracts over the last five years.

• In a declaration to Echourok, Preur has indicated that the giant group has not only neglected to renew its existing production units and look for new outlets in the oil and gas sector, but also extended to the international calls for tender to grant permits for new oil and gas explorations.
• He further added that the delay registered in the rehabilitation of the refinery complex based in the capital city Algiers will force Algeria to increase its imports in the field of refined goods in the medium term.
• Mourad Preur has asserted that the suspension of the contracts involving explorations in the hydrocarbons sector will have tragic repercussions on the overall production especially in the gas sector.
• The expert further added that “Sontarch” needs a new impetus both at the domestic and international levels, through the establishment of various partnerships with major international companies to benefit from the knowhow it acquires since its creation nearly five decades ago.
• Mourad Preur has indicated that Sonatrach has to indulge in new international experiences especially the regions of the Middle East, Gulf of Guinea and Mexico; this requires another energy strategy from the Algerian authorities, he added.
